Antimonument: collective action of making sculptures

The new part of the project “You betrayed the Party just when you should have helped it”, initiated by Andreja Kulunčić at the exhibition in MMSU Rijeka in 2022, is conceived as a series of actions involving the creation of figurines in which a total of 850 women participate. By crafting clay figurines, they symbolically dedicate one figurine for each of the female political prisoners of the Goli Otok political camp, active from 1950 to 1956, alternately located on the islands of Goli Otok and Sveti Grgur. During that period, more than 850 women accused of association with the informbiro underwent extremely cruel camp torture. In the camp itself, they had to, with their own hands and primitive tools, build paths and structures that are still visible in traces today. The punishment system, in which female prisoners were forced to be both victims and perpetrators of torture, made the camp a place of suffering and humiliation. The harassment of accused women and police surveillance continued even after their release from the camp, and they were never rehabilitated, nor were the camp areas protected from devastation and decay.

The “850 Women for 850 Women” action, among the participants of the workshops, builds a new memory of a disturbing episode from history, while simultaneously constructing a mobile antimonument consisting of 850 terracotta figurines that will be exhibited as a complete work at upcoming exhibitions. This antimonument represents a form of contemporary memorial practices of violent heritage around which modern societies have not reached a consensus, leading to the denial of history and the neglect of victims. The female political camps in the Goli Archipelago are both a symbol and a collective amnesia, further highlighting societal memory policies that patriarchally relate especially to female trauma.
