The workshop of Andreja Kulunčić: engaged artistic projects

The workshop introduced seven projects that in various ways were focused on the position of woman in very well defined social situations, as follows. (1) WOMEN.INDEX takes up the position of women in Split, Naples, Belgrade and Ljubljana, registering how women defined their own position, choosing from three options suggested: content, discriminated against, abused. (2) AUSTRIANS ONLY handled the latent prejudices against and discrimination of foreign women working in Austria. (3) NAMA: 1908 EMPLOYEES, 15 DEPARTMENT STORES, dealing with the fate of working women employed in a firm facing bankruptcy. Linking up with this was the video (4) WHAT OUR STRUGGLE GAVE ME, shot during the strike of working women in Finvest-Corp. The fifth project (5) WITHIN rounds off the theme of the position of women in contemporary society through a psychotherapy session in Vrapče Psychiatric Hospital with women patients suffering from depression as well as the question of why twice as many women as men suffer from depression. The artis sought answers from Dubravka Stijačić (concerned with developmental problems, social education and psychotherapy from Vrapče Hospital), from Dr Nataša Jokić-Begić (clinical psychologist and psychotherapist, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences) and Dr Biljana Kašić (sociologist and feminist activist, Zadar University). The sixth project (6) EQUALS, takes up the issue of the discrimination of women of different ethnic, religious and racial origins and sexual orientations in Zagreb through a series of posters put up around the city and animation on social media. The last and most recent project (7) YOU BETRAYED THE PARTY JUST WHEN YOU SHOULD HAVE HELPED IT focuses on the instatement of a female memory of the traumatic past of women political prisoners on Goli Otok and Sv. Grgur in the period of the Tito-Stalin schism.
